MFL Curriculum
Intent
At Stanton School, it is our intention to provide all of our children with a high quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) which should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We believe that learning a language enriches the curriculum, provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge, and helps to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. We endeavour to guide our children to become and grow as global citizens, developing skills that will open further opportunities later in life. The teaching of French in KS2 focuses on the 4 areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening and provides an appropriate balance of these domains, laying the foundations for further foreign language teaching at KS3. At Stanton, our school community is diverse and rich in foreign languages, we therefore recognise that our MFL curriculum should teach children the importance of celebrating other cultures, as well as laying the foundation for future language learning.
Implementation
Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of MFL involves the following:
- French is taught in weekly 1 hour lessons from Year 3 through to Year 6
- Lessons are planned and delivered in line with the La Jolie Ronde scheme of work,
- Progression maps are used by staff to ensure skills are progressive.
- Celebrating International Mother Language Day enables the whole school to be immersed in the inclusion of different cultures and languages.
- Songs and stories are used each term to enhance children’s learning.
- Explicit cross curricular links to Geography.
- CPD Insets provided to teachers to ensure high quality subject knowledge.
Impact
Our MFL curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression year on year. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Monitoring of books
- Pupil voice
- Learning walks
- Staff surveys
