MFL Curriculum
Intent
At Stanton School, we aim to provide every child with a high-quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), designed to spark curiosity, celebrate cultural diversity, and deepen their understanding of the wider world.
We believe that learning a language not only enriches the curriculum but also provides excitement, enjoyment, and challenge, while helping to foster positive attitudes towards lifelong language learning.
Our intent is for all pupils to grow as confident global citizens, developing key skills in communication and cultural understanding that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
At KS2, the teaching of French focuses on the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, ensuring a balanced and engaging approach. We also value and reflect our school’s culturally rich and multilingual community by promoting respect for other cultures and languages throughout the curriculum.
Implementation
Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of MFL involves the following:
- French is taught in weekly 1 hour lessons from Year 3 through to Year 6
- Lessons are planned and delivered in line with the Kapow Primary scheme of work
- Clear lesson structure including greetings and classroom instructions
- Progression maps are used by staff to ensure skills are progressive.
- Celebrating International Mother Language Day enables the whole school to be immersed in the inclusion of different cultures and languages.
- Songs and stories are used each term to enhance children’s learning.
- Explicit cross curricular links to Geography.
- CPD Insets provided to teachers to ensure high quality subject knowledge.
Impact
Our MFL curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression year on year. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Monitoring of books
- Monitoring use of overviews
- Pupil voice
- Learning walks
- Staff surveys
