At Stanton School children are set according to their Writing ability across each year group. Writing is taught through topics that help to inspire and interest the children. Teaching is skill based which helps the children develop and build upon a different writing skill each week. Vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation are a key focus in all lessons. A new word of the week is also introduced to the children weekly to help broaden their vocabulary. The children are encouraged to aim high in their writing and develop their skills by challenging themselves using aim high ladders, and marking ladders.


With the introduction of the new curriculum Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar are an important focus within children’s literacy lessons. One lesson a week is dedicated to grammar skills and spellings are set and tested weekly, according to the children’s ability.



Read Write Inc. Phonics, Literacy & Language, Fresh Start and Spelling are highly successful literacy programmes for 4-13 year-olds created by Ruth Miskin and published by Oxford University Press. Read Write Inc. Phonics is used by over a quarter of the UK’s primary schools. It is a comprehensive literacy programme, weaving decoding, comprehension, writing and spelling together seamlessly.
